Crossroads

deal-w-devil

On January 20th 2017, Trump will officially take up residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and I have to somehow find it within myself to accept him as the man who will speak for all people of the United States – it’s not easy. Reason being, I need to find something positive about him or his purpose in order for me to accept him and as of yet, I have not.

Maybe its because I have no idea as to what he is going to do in the future. Or, maybe because I know what he is going to do based on what he has done in the past.

This might be the moment that I use a statement made by Donald Rumsfeld to describe my quandary.

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know.

Maybe “it is a failure of imagination” I lack. Rumsfeld also believed that is was this, “failure of imagination” that brought about the attack on Pearl Harbor, Twin Towers and the Pentagon. Who would have thought that Japan would be able to perform a sneak attack on a US base in Hawaii? Who would have thought that a group of men affiliated with Al-Qaeda would be able to learn how to fly a plane in the United States, and then hijack three jets in order to use them as missiles…failure of imagination. Maybe what I need to do is imagine a positive outcome to what I don’t know because for me, the known known is that Trump is going to be president. The known unknown for me is that I know that I have no idea what Trump and his cabinet is going to do to my future. Finally, the unknown unknown for me are the things that I have no prior knowledge of that can provide me with the information to predict what will happen in the future.

So lets create one…a positive one.

Trump has the potential to, “splinter the (Republican Party) into a thousand pieces and scatter it into the winds” (Kennedy), thus leaving room for a new party or to give legitimacy to other parties that have been practically non-existent or just waiting in the wings.

A known known about Trump is that he doesn’t believe that global warming is an issue. As a result, there will be more coal mining, fracking and drilling – The Dakota Pipeline issue won’t be one after Trump is in office. Using a bit of imagination, there is going to be a lot more pollution everywhere giving the Green Party a golden opportunity to push hard to be heard and I believe that people will start listening.

Trump will also make the rich a lot richer, playing right into the hands of the Independent Party and Bernie Sanders (which is probably why he still sounds like he’s campaigning on his message). If Bernie doesn’t croak, I’m fairly sure that he won’t have a problem getting the nomination.

As for the Democrats…I don’t know what to say. We lost our chance with Hillary and I can’t stretch my imagination far enough to see her or anyone else win the next time. As we saw with Trump, he won not because he spoke the truth but because he spoke his mind and he didn’t give a rats ass about what anyone thought about it. We have a lot of people in this country that are angry and in a sense, Trump spoke for them and they ate it up. As we can see today, Trump didn’t drain the swamp he just filled it with crocodiles as a means of managing it and making it his own.

Maybe this is a turning point for America, a tipping point…a crossroad where we may have to make a deal with the devil, or maybe we made that deal years ago and now the devil has come for our souls. Well, I’m not ready to give up my soul and I would wager that there are a lot of people that are not ready to give up theirs. This may be the time for a new Party – a Peoples Party. A Party that believes that power should only be wielded by the creator (whoever the creator may be) and that we…all people living on this planet, should be allowed to work in order to provide for his/her family and to serve his/her community in whatever capacity. A Peoples Party that believes that the health of everyone is tantamount for a healthier community and a healthier planet. A Peoples Party that believes that education is not a game of numbers but a pathway to a life of fulfillment. A Peoples Party that believes that poverty is an anachronism. A Peoples Party that believes that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is not just a bunch of empty words but a calling, that a government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth.

I’m not a leader. The last person that I would run to the ends of the earth with has just left office. I just need someone that I could believe in and maybe Trump, being the new president of the United States, will fracture this planet enough so that something new may come shining through.

That’s what I’m holding on to…
